Design Thinking: The Not-for-Profit Giving Experience

Inspired by the Stanford University d.school of design and select elements of their Design Thinking methodology, I designed and hosted a workshop called “Re-thinking the Not-for-Profit Giving Experience”, at the Department of Design in South Africa. The Department of Design is a three week-long event that supports sustainability and collaboration. It is the initiative of the Government of the Netherlands as part of their contribution to World Design Capital Cape Town 2014.

At Stanford’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design – known as the d.school – the methodology states, “Students of all disciplines learn the design thinking process as a methodology for creative and human-centered problem solving that empowers them to collaborate across disciplines and tackle the world’s biggest challenges”.

Through my involvement with Girls & Football SA, I was asked to do two guest lectures at Stanford University. On the ground in South Africa, Girls & Football SA also had the opportunity to work with lecturers from the d.school.

By combining a real-life challenge with elements of Design Thinking, we were able to come up with some pretty amazing new ideas.
