On the evening of May 17th, we attended the Transform MENA Awards, winning a Bronze award in the category: Best Visual Identify for a Charity/NGO for our work on the Girls & Football SA brand. This is such a proud moment for our team, which is spread out all over the world (Germany, Canada, South Africa, Ireland and the UAE!).

Girls & Football SA focuses on the development of girls and young women through sport, media and education. The Transform MENA Bronze award was granted to us for our work on the entire visual identity of the brand, in addition the story build, brand awareness and collateral creation.

Our next steps with Girls & Football SA include the publication of our book, “Tackled’ (August 2017). The book focuses on inclusion of boys and men and supporting conversation around creating safe spaces about masculinity, gender and boys’ development through sport.

We’re super pleased and proud to have been a part of the awards! See you next year!

There's only one way to describe the STEP Conference, the largest interactive tech event in the Middle East and that is, "Electric!". Such an awesome two days! I felt very fortunate to have been selected to speak and focused on the mobile health app, mGirls, a mobile health app our team at Girls & Football SA built in partnership with MXit reach, which is available in the Google PlayStore and the App store.

Dubai Lynx is the Middle East's largest advertising conference. I was selected to speak on the advertising landscape in Africa. I shared nuances around storytelling about the continent based on my experience working in South Africa for four years and my previous experience as the IBM Brand and Advertising Manager for the Middle East and Africa.

The Dubai Lynx team and audience are amazing - they provide an ultimate platform, not just to speak, but also to engage.

While at IBM, I was invited to be a panelist for the Women in STEM conference at the American University in Dubai. This was a great opportunity to speak to young women and men and an interesting introduction to game-changers in Dubai's tech space. I was also awarded the STEM & AUD Women Empowerment Award for efforts in improving the tech space for female entrepreneurs.

The award was based on my work with mGirls, a mobile health app our team at Girls & Football SA built in partnership with MXit reach, which is available in the Google PlayStore and the App store.

Upon moving to Dubai in 2013, I was looking forward to the opportunity to travel the region and learn more about the Middle East. So, it was an absolute honor when I was selected as a speaker at Glowork Saudi Arabia, an event attended by over 65,000 women in Riyadh. At this amazing conference, I spoke about my work in girls' education and health, and our mobile app, mGirls. I was presented a Speaker's Award, and hosted workshops on Storytelling and Personal Brand Building. The women I met at this conference were unbelievably talented and determined to build lasting career success.

Glowork has now helped over 26,000 women find direct jobs in the Kingdom, while a far greater number have benefited from access to the firm’s advice and career fairs.

In 2015, the FIFA Women's World Cup was hosted across Canada. This monumental event helped accelerate change in the women's game. I was selected by Women Deliver in 2014 in advance of the FIFA 2015 Women's World Cup to join Women Deliver Advisory Council alongside other leading gender, development and sport practitioners.

Together with a team of government leaders, nonprofit practitioners, and colleagues working in sport for development, we worked on policy and procedure for the Girl Power in Play conference, hosted in Ottawa that summer.

I had an absolute blast giving guest lectures for Stanford University students on sport for development and the nonprofit sector. For each guest lecture, I shared ideas on building a nonprofit organization in the sport for development field via web-conference with a team of Stanford's high-performing student athletes.

During these lectures - and while I was prepping for them - I remember thinking, "This is what my teachers must have felt like!" A pretty intimidating experience at first, I ended up truly enjoying the opportunity to connect with students at Stanford University.

Every three years, Women Deliver selects 100 young leaders from around the world. In 2013, I was selected as a Young Leader and was honored to carry the title until 2016. The Young Leaders program is supported by the Gates Foundation, Johnson & Johnson and other major organizations.

Women Deliver is based out of the U.S. and is a global advocate for girls’ and women’s health, rights, and wellbeing. The team brings together diverse voices and interests to drive progress, particularly in maternal, sexual, and reproductive health and rights.

As part of the 2013 Women Deliver Conference in Kuala Lumper, Malaysia, I was invited to speak on sexual violence against girls in South Africa. It was an immense platform and opportunity to share our work in South Africa.

In 2012, First Lady Michelle Obama visited South Africa. After her visit, we received a letter from the First Lady, congratulating us on our work at Girls & Football SA. This was a life-changing moment and we felt incredibly proud of all the work our team has done. (Check us out with our letter in front of the White House!)

We had created a video for the First Lady, hand-delivered with letters from our football players, sharing an inside peak of one of our workshops. It's very sweet and you can view it here.

Global Giving makes it possible for local organizations to access the funding, tools, training, and support they need to become more effective and make our world a better place.

In 2012, I was selected to join the Global Giving Leadership Council due to the work done at Girls & Football SA. Through the International Association for Volunteer Efforts and its partners, such as the United Nations and Partners of the Americas, I was invited to speak in Colombia on youth volunteering and nonprofit organizations. As a speaker, I had the opportunity to deep dive into challenges around volunteering and implications of volunteering on youth. The ability to volunteer can be seen as a luxury and I discussed challenges youth volunteers may experience. The presentation was based on the work we'd done at Girls & Football SA and lessons learned in volunteer management, one of the hardest aspects of nonprofit work.

As Girls & Football SA continued to develop, so did our reach! In the same year we received recognition from Ashoka Changemakers, Girls and Football SA was selected as the first place winner of the 3rd HALF and National Committee for International Cooperation and Sustainable Development Early Entry Prize in the Changing Lives Through Football competition.

We presented our solution to increase girls' access to education through sport at a competition in The Netherlands to a panel of judges. The criteria included innovation and approach and was hosted in a Dragon's Den type of setting. Slightly nerve-wracking, but fantastic results!
